On a rainy Monday night I traipsed up the steps of the Markland House on Flagler College’s campus to attend a FLARE event. I was carrying my shoulder bag with my laptop, notepad and some books. I was instantly teleported back to my freshman year, as a young Flagler student, unsure of where the future would bring me. I never would have guessed that I would return many years later to read from one of my published young adult novels as a resident of St. Augustine.
Poetry editor, Caitlyn McCrea, invited me to read at the FLARE launch party for their newest publication. She has been interning with me for a semester and I jumped at the chance to check out what she and her talented classmates were up to.
The night was a culmination of hard work and a celebration of accomplishment. The readings were inspiring. I could actually feel the talent, respect and creativity pulsing through the Markland House and I was honored to be a part of it. I’m so grateful that Flagler offers a program like FLARE to foster the talent and skill set it takes to put together such a unique publication where students can express their distinctive vision and voice.
